Charlie Bettigole
Charlie is the Director of the GIS Center for Interdisciplinary Research at Skidmore College. Charlie teaches GIS and remote sensing courses, and collaborates with faculty, students, and strategic partners on a diverse array of research projects.
Charlie has a background in Wildlife Biology and Spatial Ecology (M.S. University of Vermont). He is broadly interested in leveraging the latest technologies in geoinformatics and data science to help solve pressing ecological dilemmas. Research highlights include a spatially-explicit count of the number of trees on earth (3.04 trillion). Charlie is the primary developer of the Stratifi web application. Current research includes understanding spatial patterns of Spongy Moth induced forest mortality in Lake George, collaborations with PRASBX archeological research consortium in Gautemala, and as a science advisor to projects with NASA DEVELOP.
Prior to Skidmore, Charlie was a co-founder and program director of both the Ucross High Plains Stewardship Initiative and Quick Carbon at the Yale University School of Forestry & Environmental Studies. His work there focused on applied, collaborative research with land managers in the American West, leveraging geospatial technologies for on-the-ground impact.
